As many as 440 boxes of country made illicit liquor were seized from a private bus and a car escorting the bus. It was being smuggled from Haryanan to this region. Special Staff nabbed five persons and seized a Verna car, which was escorting the bus near Naruana village in the district. The police have booked the accused at the Bathinda Sadar police station. Special Staff sub-inspector Jaspal Singh said a case had been registered against the bus owner and liquor contractor. Divulging more details, SI Jaspal Singh said on Wednesday, his team was checking near Naruana village. Acting on a tip off, the police stopped a private bus and during checking, they seized 410 boxes of liquor from the bus and 30 boxes of liquor from the Verna car. He said the accused had been identified as Deepak, Subhash, Harjinder, Paramjit and Sukha. During initial interrogation, it came out that the accused had brought the liquor from Raguana village in Haryana. With liquor rates in Haryana being 30-40 percent less than those in Punjab, liquor continues to be smuggled into various districts of Punjab from the neighbouring state. Punjab shares a 45 km stretch with Haryana. The Bathinda police have set up a permanent naka on the Haryana border near Doomwali village to check smuggling.
